HIV/AIDS in Malawi

Children all over Malawi suffer from malaria, diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections, nutritional deficiencies and HIV/AIDS. Despite increased efforts to raise awareness and tackle the spread of HIV/AIDS by the Malawi Government, the highest rate of new infections is occurring in young people between the ages of 13 and 24.

Sport is well known to be an effective method of reaching young people and can help with social, emotional and physical development. We are fortunate to be able to attract many young people who want to take part in sport and feel we can use this as a tool to share information and raise awareness on how to prevent infection. We aim to do this by distributing information, incorporating awareness games into training and holding group discussions.

There are several international organisations that train coaches and community workers to be able to tackle health issues by using sport, games and dance. We are in contact with these to arrange training for our coaches who have already completed sports coaching qualifications, so that they can offer a quality service to the people of Mangochi.

The local community benefit greatly from these courses. They ensure that the young people are receiving quality training and information, but they also empower our coaches with increased education and income. When they are trained to a certain level they will be able to train other young people to become youth mentors/community workers in the area.

Here are some facts about HIV/AIDS in Malawi:
- HIV/AIDS affects nearly one million people in Malawi
- 83,000 of these are children
- One third of infected mothers pass the virus on to their babies
- Almost half a million orphans in Malawi have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS
- Most new infections are in the 13 - 24 age groups

To help us raise the funds to send our coaches onto these vital training courses please click on the donate link and send whatever you can afford. All donations are really very gratefully received and will make such a difference.
